One of the biggest misconceptions I see people make is thinking that the best way to have a perfectly fitting wardrobe is to buy a pattern and sew it from scratch.

And I get it. Everyone tells you to just sew your pattern based on your measurement that falls in the largest size and then “just take it in”. So it’s easy to fall into that trap.

But let me ask you. Does sewing your largest measurement result in perfectly fitting clothing every time? No, because everyone has different proportions that need to be taken into consideration. Patterns will fit some people as is, and others (like me!) require adjustments every. Single. Time. I get it – I’m there with you!

If this has happened to you, you could actually keep wasting fabric and time over and over trying to find something that’s made for your body. And instead of the dream wardrobe that makes you look forward to getting dressed in the morning, you’ll just end up with frustration and wasted fabric.

So, how DO you get the perfectly fitting wardrobe, that makes you feel confident and ready to take on the world when you get dressed?

You need to understand that mass-produced clothing – and sewing pattern sizing – is based on “averages” of measurements and proportions.

And guess what? We aren’t all “average” proportions.

Your height and build are unique. Your clothes can match you,  if you learn how to do alterations your self.

Learning how to do alterations is the fastest way to having a wardrobe that fits YOU perfectly.

A lot of sewists like to hate alterations – they think it is boring, or tedious. But if you are someone who has made clothes that don’t fit, or if you get frustrated with clothing shopping, then learning to do this yourself can totally transform the relationship you have with what you put on your body.

If you have enough sewing skill to sew some basic projects like bags, you CAN learn about fit. Think of it as just the next level up.

You can then apply this knowledge to clothes you already have in your closet (I like to call this “shopping in my closet” – which is taking clothes you don’t wear because they fit weird and making them your new favourite clothes). I’ve done this, and I can show you how.

Dress on inside out, with the skirt pinned in at the side seams for alterations.

This is the best way to start learning.

Once you start to practice what alterations you need on what you already have, this then makes clothes shopping so much easier – you’ll know what to look for, and what you can adjust yourself. And what YOU like – not what I (or anyone else for that matter) thinks you should wear.

Then you can also apply this knowledge to clothing you make for yourself from a pattern – with more fit knowledge, you’ll know the best ways to take things in or out for YOUR body.

So let me ask you – do you want to keep feeling frustrated when the clothes you make or buy just don’t fit, or do you want to learn how to make adjustments to fit yourself, and your style?

I will be creating a program to walk through my four-step fitting framework to help people who need a system tackle doing their own alterations. If you are interested, get on the waitlist to be the first to know the details and when this program is open for registration.
