While it did take a bit of time to learn the fundamentals, they now can do a regular alteration in about an hour – less time to go to the tailor’s and pick it up again.

Alterations are a quick way to get a great fitting wardrobe

While a fully handmade wardrobe isn’t impossible, it might be out of scope for a lot of people in terms of time. It is for me. That’s one of the many things I love about adjusting my own clothes.

It’s a pretty cool superpower I think to take some off-the-rack clothes and make them fit like they were custom made.

Be Your Own Tailor Alterations Workshop

For about the same cost as two trips to a tailor, you can learn to be your own. I’ll show you my 4-step fitting and sewing system. Get the workshop here!

Goodbye, frustrating clothing shopping.

Goodbye, awkward fitting handmade clothing.

What you will learn in this on-demand alterations workshop

Figuring out where to do your alterations

While I do demonstrate how to do some more common alterations, we start with how to look at your garment and figure out what you can do, taking into consideration features like linings, zippers, topstitching and more that can make it easier or harder to alter.

How to pin/mark alterations on yourself

Then I go over pinning tips – how to pin things in on yourself, even if you don’t have a dress form or someone to help you who knows what they are doing.

Lesson on hip to waist ratio and what “curvy” really means

If you are someone who has ever had trouble finding jeans that fit in both the hip and the waist, you’ll want to hear this training.

I go over how size charts work, that they are a system created to produce “average” sizes in order to mass-produce clothing and don’t work for everyone. This can be particularly hard for lower body garments.

The more you know about this, the easier that shopping will be because you’ll know what you can alter and what to avoid. We’ll also cover how low vs high rise jeans can fit differently.

At the end of the two-part alterations workshop, you will:

  • Have an easier time shopping because you’ll know what you can and can’t alter easily
  • Know what alterations work for your body
  • Learn how to put ease back into a garment
  • Know the “order of alterations” – the order you do alterations in matters when there is more than one thing to do
  • Learn common alterations techniques like darts, adjusting waistbands, taking things in at the side seams
  • Understand the importance of pressing and how to press curved seams
  • Know how to look at a garment and figure out how to come up with a plan to alter it.
