I always loved these heart basket Christmas ornaments. As a child, I would see lots of these at Christmas functions. Making a heart basket ornament is a common Christmas craft in Scandinavian countries (I have a Norwegian background), usually made out of shiny paper.

Wrapping paper or construction paper works well – this tutorial could be done with paper. This is the first time I have made them out of felt, but it turned out well, for a more durable ornament.

YOU WILL NEED

  • Two different colours of felt
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Glue gun if using felt, or glue stick for paper
  • Iron (felt version only)

Make a heart basket ornament template

First, you will need a template cut on paper for half of the heart.

Mine is 3″ wide, and 4″ long. I rounded the corners and then cut 2 slits most of the way up, to make 3 sections (each section is 1″ wide)

Fold your felt.

I took a sheet of felt, made a crease 4″ from the edge, sprayed it with water, and pressed the crease with an iron.

If you are using paper, just fold a crease 4″ up from the edge of paper (no iron).

Cut your felt.

The bottom of the template gets lined up with the bottom of the fold. When you cut it out, you cut through both layers of the felt and the 3 sections keep the fold.

Braid your heart basket ornament

Now we braid. Follow along with the images:

Make felt handle

Now that you have your heart basket ornament, it’s time to cut the handle. I cut a strip 3/4″ wide and 8″ long. Glue using a glue gun to the inside of the heart on each side to create the handle.

That’s it! You now have a complete heart basket ornament. I hung mine on the tree, but I have also made paper ones to use as gift tags.

Since it is a little basket, you can also add a few things in like mini candy canes or other treats – can even be made larger and filled and used for party favours.

Happy crafting.
